While HTLAL was down, I downloaded some tables from SIL and built a searchable database
of 7,988 languages:

Languages of the world

Here are some fun queries to try:

English
French
Arabic
Chinese
Egyptian
Norse
Sign Language

Yes, this is an incredible time sink. Enjoy!

Each entry links to a number of sources:

- The Wikipedia article on the language.
- The Ethnologue database entry for the language.
- Maps of where the language is spoken, courtesy of Linguist List.
- The HTLAL profile for the language, if any.
- HTLAL threads about the language, if any.
- HTLAL users who are studying the language.
- The HTLAL wiki language description (if any). Please feel free to add some!

The site is available in 3 languages. You can choose between them using the popup menu
at the upper right of the screen.

- English
- French (please feel free to correct my mistakes!)
- Brazilian Portuguese

The Portuguese version was done by HTLAL's kirmly, who did an awesome job. Many thanks!
My goal is to have a lots of translations so that we can practice whichever language we
want.

Please feel free to post questions and bug reports in this thread! And this isn't the
only feature I want to build for HTLAL. :-)

Translating langforums

Why should we have to look at English all day when we study so many glorious languages?
If you'd like to translate the site into a new language, here's how:

1. Decide what language you want to translate the site into, and announce it on this
thread. I'll go ahead and add the language to the project for you.
2. Visit the translation site.
3. Click on "Sign in with Github".
4. If you have a Github account, go ahead and use it.
5. If you don't, create a new Localeapp account (and choose the FREE account!).
6. Click on the red number next to the language name and fill in the missing
translations.
7. Post in this thread when you're done, or if you have questions.

Thank you to anybody who wants to help, and don't hesitate to ask questions!

OK, one more shiny new feature (while waiting for a client's server to restart).

You can now search in multiple languages. All of these queries, for example, should
match "French":

French
français
フランス語

But it gets even better! Use the popup on the upper-right to change the language to
French or to Brazilian Portuguese, and the language names will be automatically
translated and linked to the correct Wikipedia.

Let's say you're a French speaker, and you search for "french". This will bring up mix
of French and English results which appears as follows:

Quote:

Français (en)
Créole antillais (en)
Créole guyanais (en)
Karipúna (en)
Créole louisianais (en)
Créole réunionnais (en)
Créole sainte-lucien (en)
Creole French, San Miguel
Créole seychellois (en)
Français cadien (en)
Moyen français (en)
Ancien français (en)
Langue des signes française (en)
Swiss-French Sign Language

For the articles which link to the French Wikipedia, there's also an "(en)" link to
take you to the English-language Wikipedia.

The translated language names are actually based on the links between different
versions of Wikipedia. Enjoy!
