A dialect continuum is where
one language gradually turns into another. The intermediate stages are mutually
intelligible, but people at the far ends may not be able to understand each other.
It's a really common phenomenon. The smaller Romance languages do it (or did, before they
started disappearing), as do English and Lowland Scotts.
