If you put it that way, then I'm apt to become cynical and think that people are making excuses. If someone doesn't want to do something, then he/she will find a way to weasel out of it.

I have to agree that that's the case in 90% of the cases, maybe more.

I try to imagine some sort of edict changing the alphabet that English uses, and it is difficult not to have sympathy for people who find themselves in that position.

I took a Russian class years ago. I can still sound out Russian words when I see them, but I don't often know what they mean. When I was taking a linguistics class years later, I was told that I should feel inadequate if I didn't know the Greek alphabet because of its similarity to the International Phonetic Alphabet. No comment. I learned the Greek alphabet.

I had a similar experience to my Russian experience with Hebrew. It is more difficult for me to sound out and recognize Hebrew words that are cognates with English and other languages I speak.

Arabic has intimidated me. Maybe I'll have another post on this subject in a few years.
