I guess a good way to remember it is to think that 拿 includes the character for hand (手).

Yes, that was how this word was made up.
a person + a mouth + a hand

No it's not (there's an extra stroke). It's directly

...

Dude, whoever taught you to write 拿, sue that person! ;) j/k

Regarding the original question: the two are basically the same in everyday Chinese.

so in a way, 拿 really only requires 1 hand (over a short distance)... And 带 may use both
hands or be "carried"/"brought" over a longer distance?

The difference between 拿 & 带 have nothing to do with distance travel or whether it requires 1 or both hands
but rather on the context. In some cases they are interchangeable but not all.

You would say: 我孩子去旅行 (I bring my child along when I go on vacation) but you wouldn't say: 我
(I grab my child when when I go on vacation). Using 带 in this case means "to bring along". You can
take your kid to the daycare center down the street which isn't really long distance or using both hands: 我
You can say: 我忘记钱包 (I forgot to grab my wallet) or 我忘记钱包 (I forgot to bring/ carry my
wallet). Both would be correct.
You can say: 我去房间东西 (I get something from my room/ I grab something from my room) but NOT 我去

Thanks shk00design ... that was helpful, especially the examples. I'm pretty sure I understand this entirely at this
point. I hope anyone else reading this also understands the difference between these.

(edit: some characters didn't display for some reason...)
