One of my friends went for an interview, and the job he applied for requires fluent English. The interviewer was a Tanzanian, and he started the conversation with something like "mark.. yourself", which my friend just couldn't get it.
Here I guess it might be "market yourself"?
Is there such expression that exists in an interview?

It means that the applicant should convince the employer to hire him, just like when
marketing ads try to convince you to buy their products. It's sort of "selling" oneself.

Yes, it makes sense. But is it what native speakers would often say in interviews?

It could be, depends on the kind of interview. If somebody told me that in an interview I
would take it as a friendly "show me what you've got" kind of expression. But I also
think that it's not a very serious way of starting an interview. But I'm not a native
speaker :)
