il mio = my
But I don't know why the --il-- is there? Surely mio means "my"?
I've seen this a lot in Italian and it's confusing.
Can anyone explain this in basic terms to me?

Actually, "il" is the article "the" for the masculine singular. "Mio" is "my" also for masculine singular. For example:
"Il libro è rosso" (The book is red)
"Mio padre è alto" (My father is tall)
That is separately, but together, the Italian possessive adjectives are preceded by definite articles, therefore you'll find "il mio", "la mia", "i miei", "le mie", etc.

As fabriciocarraro already pointed out, the Italian possessive pronouns are always preceded by the definite article:
Il mio libro è rosso.
La tua macchina è nuova.
I sui amici sono gentili.
Le nostre amiche sono belle.
An important exception, however, are relatives in the singular, which don't take the definite article:
Mio padre è vecchio.
Suo fratello ha gli occhi verdi.
