This reminds me of an anecdote:
When they put the play Pygmalion on stage in Hebrew, Mr. Higgins tought the flower girl the sephardic pronunciation, because it the semitic way of pronunciation and has theoretically the higher prestige. But after the play the daughter of one spectator asked her father: "Why did Mr. Higgins teach Pygmalion to speak like our cleaning woman?"
Well, the affluent and powerful members of Erets Israel are the Ashkenazi Jews and therefore their style of speaking became predominant. I believe a long time sephardic news anchors were used because of their perceived more original pronunciation, but the battle seems lost.

I don't believe in original pronunciation, only in pronunciation that is used. I don't
care how anything was pronounced 3000 years ago.
