Does anyone know of (or can anyone describe) a roadmap for learning Latin grammar? I know that one has to learn the verb conjugations and the noun declensions, but I have very little idea what else you have to learn before you're "done" learning the grammar.

For the purposes of this question, I'm abstracting away from the fact that learning Latin would require you to learn a lot a vocabulary as well.

As Latin is a school subject for many, a lot of examination specifications outline a lot of the grammar in a clear roadmap.

After verb and noun accidence comes adjective accidence, including tricky i-stem vs consonant stem, and degrees of comparison (good, better, best).

Thereafter, it's all about usage of cases, of tenses/moods/other parts.

I'd say related to that, it comes down to particular types of clauses (participle-based; ablative absolute; purpose, result and effect clauses; positioning clauses with time expressions; conditional statements; indirect speech).

Here's a simple idea. Go to the Amazon.com page for Wheelock's grammar.

http://www.amazon.com/Wheelocks-Latin-7th-Edition-Series/dp/ 0061997226#_

Click on the free preview and look at the names of the chapters in the TOC. There's your roadmap.

Thanks both. I'll check out Wheelock's grammar.
