If I remember correctly, at one point there was a Finnish challenge between a few members here and they had a set number of maximum hours. That seemed like the really "fair" way to assess which methods worked the best: take one language, allow participants to use different methods, but cap the number of hours. Somebody who puts in 150 hours in six weeks is likely at a different level than someone who put in 40 hours during the same amount of time.

Yes, and originally this was the idea of the 6 week challenge. Also, Finnish was chosen because it's not related to the languages already spoken by the participants.
