To the original post: why not just get the perfectly good/great Assimil course that already exists in an English base?

The "With Ease" course is great and cheap. So, to answer the question posed, I think getting the current Assimil course without the base language would not be a good idea and would be much worse for the language learner than getting the "With Ease" course.

The latter is actually a great question! I really was just curious about the concept of
"prepping" to study while waiting with the audio. Anyway, what is the difference
between the following 2 Assimils?

http://www.amazon.com/Spanish-With-Ease-Language-Learning/dp /2700510704/ref=sr_1_1?
ie=UTF8&qid=1394288377&sr=8-1&keywords=spanish+with+ease

and

http://www.amazon.com/Spanish-Ease-Edition-Assimil/dp/354100 0201/ref=sr_1_2?
ie=UTF8&qid=1394288377&sr=8-2&keywords=spanish+with+ease

It appears the 2nd link is a newer edition, but doesn't come with audio. Anyone know
what actually changed between the two?

But, also, I've heard the current "Spanish with Ease" is quite a bore and that the newest
version is much more lively and enjoyable.

I have high hopes for the upcoming release, but the current English-base "Spanish with Ease" definitely leaves a lot
to be desired in the entertainment department. I'm about a quarter of the way through it now, but sometimes it's a
struggle to stay motivated to come back to it every day because the "dialogs" are often just collections of sentences
illustrating grammar points that do not form a coherent conversation.

I listened ahead quite a bit when studying Assimil New French with Ease. I found it a
useful way to get used to the sounds. It was more helpful than listening to native audio
at the early stages, because I was able to actually make out the sounds [actually I did
both: I previewed all of Assimil and I listened to Rfi- both were useful]. And audio
previews are useful for when I actually take up the formal study of an Assimil lesson,
because I have already figured a lot of it out on my own.

While I agree spending loads of time on it might not be efficient, not previewing is also
inefficient.

I'm currently studying with Assimil le Persan sans Pain despite knowing next to no French. I still find the audio dialogues highly valuable. Assimil has a very painless way of introducing new vocabulary and grammar.

Going in, I already had some knowledge of Persian and I knew the writing system. I don't think that's necessary, but it does make things easier when you have no translation you can rely on. As the grammar part of Assimil is in French and useless for me, I use other sources to get explanations of the grammar points Assimil introduces.

To get the most out of it, I have all the sentences from Assimil in Anki - audio sentence flashcards are great for retaining everything you study.

I haven't found Assimil Spanish to be as well done as New French with Ease. Not as funny, the audio starts
out extremely slow, less coherence in the dialogues, etc.

Using Spanish
has terrible translations
(but awesome audio), while Using French is a credible continuation from NFWE.

The experience of the difference in quality for Assimil courses between these two languages would make me
wonder which block L'Espagnol will be a chip off of.

I've cannot find the thread on it, but I recall reading comparisons of L'espagnol with
Spanish with Ease and recall the L'Espagnol as seeming better. Hopefully the quality of
the translation is up to snuff!
