There is a series on Youtube from the Dallas Texas School System which is designed to teach high school students Russian. People with strong experience learning languages might find it really slow, but for a young person who has never learned another language, it might be a comfortable beginning. I learned the Cyrillic alphabet through it and am still working through the later lessons (I'm a total beginner at Russian). It's about 20 years old, and the book they use in later lessons is out of print, so might not be optimal, but if nothing else, your young friend could start with the alphabet and it's free and quick to access.

I think you should tell your friend about this forum. He will find a lot of useful information here.
I agree with Henkkles that the alphabet is the easiest part of learning Russian. The natural way would be to start at that. I'm pretty sure there's plenty of free material on the internet to do just that. I disagree with Henkkles though about what kind of motivation is needed to learn a language. It's uncommon to wake up one day and just out of the blue feel a burning desire to learn Russian. There's a saying "the appetite grows with eating". Sometimes curiosity about a language is enough to get you started and then with time your interest in it grows and grows until it turns into passion. It's important your friend starts and keeps going. Some good material was already advised in this thread so I won't repeat it. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||||||||
