I do that and it has helped my English as well. Now I use the french base assimil Italian course, and it is like learning french all over again :D

I think you should give it a try and have an open mind to improve your English as you learn a third language. If it works then it's fine, if it doesn't no harm done.

Others have answered already in general.

I just want to point out that the Minna no
Nihongo
series provides a main workbook in Japanese (and only Japanese) and a
companion grammar book available in various languages, one of which is Vietnamese.

I've quite enjoyed using that series and I prefer it to Japanese for Busy People, which
is aimed at English-speaking learners and provides for no other languages (as far as I
know).

An alternative would be to learn French and use the Assimil Japanese course.
