If you have learned German, what plan (order of materials) would you suggest for self study.
I still have a way to go in Spanish but I will have an opportunity to travel to Germany and Switzerland (Interlaken to be exact) next year and thought it would be nice to add to my Spanish studies. I know that I only have so much time in the day and German would take away from my love of learning Spanish...but I think it would make the travel experience more enjoyable to be able to communicate some with local people. I will drop down to only an hour a day for Spanish but would like to add an hour a day for German. I was thinking the following in the next 6 months: Michel Thomas Living Language Complete or Ultimate if I can find it. Start FSI If you were to start German, what would you do? I would definitely add some vocabulary course (like an Anki deck or a Memrise course) and also check Deutsch - Warum nicht?. I can't work with FSI though and I haven't tried Living Language, maybe they don't lack vocabulary.

Get stuck into Michel Thomas. His rapid-fire drilling will help you build sentences right from the start. Nothing
much in the way of vocabulary here, but he certainly bashes out the verbs. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

I'm cuurrently learning German, 15 days in. I've got anki + Duolingo for vocabulary, and

If I were to redo German, I would do:
1. LOTS AND LOTS of vocabulary 2. some grammar such as prepositions and cases 3. a little sentence building 2 & 3 means more "in the bank" and "with them" phrase-type drilling, and less "I am in the bank" and "I am with them" full-sentence-type drilling. 5 persons have voted this message useful | |||

As smallwhite has said, my vocabulary is tiny at this point, maybe 2-300 words, although
even with a small amount they are hardly automatic as in when I see a cup I dont automatically think of Tasse. I don't have any particular recommendation, but I do have one observation: It seems that a VERY LARGE vocabulary is needed to read German. Larger than the other languages I've learnt. So it might be a good idea to go for quantity first, and cram a bunch of passive vocabulary. Or else it'd take forever to be able to use native materials. 1 person has voted this message useful |
