Hey y'all, was just wondering what you guys thought of this American ju jitsu
athlete's English. The first video is of her speaking in 2010 (at the latest), whereas
the second one is taken from earlier this year. In the more recent video, her accent
sounds quite different - not as strongly American as before, but potentially has some
Brazilian influence? She moved to Brazil a couple of years ago, I think.

For the record, her Portuguese seems quite good (at least in accent) from the third
link - found below - and she is engaged to a Brazilian. I haven't listened to her
pre-Brazil self and haven't paid attention to the structures she is using, but the
accent does sound quite different in the two videos. Would be interested to know what
the community here thinks.

Her father is Brazilian, so I wonder if she was raised bilingual (like me)? I can confirm that her Portuguese is very
good. It isn't obviously non-native.

Her accent in English indeed seems to have changed. People do tend to slightly and subconsciously imitate the
accents of people around them both in individual conversations and over a period of time living somewhere. It
sounds like she's near the upper extreme of the normal range in how much she does this.

I wonder how quickly it changes back when she visits the US.

I am not sure, but if she were really monolingual, and that happened, I can say that
things happen like that sometimes. Over the past few years I tried speaking to myself
in Spanish and speaking with Hispanophone friends, whilst limiting as many contacts by
using English despite living in two Anglophone countries. I have also been quite busy,
so I did not meet up with friends that were Anglophones, so I actually spoke Spanish
(with myself) more than English with people, other than when I had to go to the
doctor's surgery, buy groceries, and stuff.

I know some who are so surrounded by their heritage language that despite living in an
Anglophone country, sound exactly like a foreigner from the country of their parents
despite being born and bred here.

End result is that my English accent is completely messed up, as if it was not already
from living in both the UK and USA on and off, but now people mark about how it has a
Spanish tilt. That mixed in with Mancunian and Bay Area accent.
