I'm learning Spanish and since FSI has proven to be absolutely boring, and Practice Makes Perfect isn't enough to use it as a main book, I've a question: would it be worth it to take French Assimil "Spanish with Ease" and try to translate it into English? I have only basic knowledge of French, but because it's similar to Spanish I can guess a lot of things. Is such task actually manageable? I mean, there're lots of nuances explained in Assimil which would be useful for me, but since I already studied all the grammar I can use other books to clarify things. Would I benefit from the exercises in Assimil if I translated them, or is this a pointless endeavour? Thanks!

Why not use the English version?

Why not get "Spanish with Ease" in English? It's availabe (I have it myself). Personally I wouldn't translate anything if my level wasn't that high, and since Assiil is (very much) about everyday speech, dialogues and such, a lot of the colloquialisms used for the French students will probably get lost after translating them to English - and you wouldn't learn good Spanish from it.

Well, it's really hard (if not impossible) for me to get it, since I live in Ukraine and have no credit card. And since I already have French/Italian copies, I was wondering if I could use them somehow. I don't really need explanations or grammar, just some good exercises to reinforce my knowledge and move from passive understanding of language to active usage. Thanks for the suggestion, though!

OK, if I were you I would probably either do my best anyway, by reading the dialogues, listening to the audio (if you have it), and try to figure out things from the French instructions - or "simply" learn French/Italian first (I think courses for both languages are available in Russian).

I use Assimil audio for shadowing. The conversations are good so as long as you have just them and repeat what is happening it will help you to practise accent, speaking and you'll work things out, but it should be a supplement if used in this manner.
