Hello All,
I just recently stumbled onto these forums while conducting a Google search on language learning. I find this site to be extremely beneficial and interesting as I'm highly fascinated with language learning/acquisition. I have studied Arabic for quite some time now (Modern Standard and Egyptian Colloquial mainly), and thought it may be time to invest in a electronic dictionary. I've been thinking about this a lot- primarily because I'm currently in Egypt participating in a yearlong immersion Arabic language program, and believe I would benefit from such a device due to its portability and speed (faster and more manageable then using a dictionary, especially in the streets of Cairo). I definitely can hold my own in conversation (especially in Egyptian dialect), but I do find myself lacking vocabulary in certain areas- mostly understudied/uncommon areas such as spices, medicines, hygiene products, cleaning products, etc- just random/highly technical vocabulary words. Don't want to make this a long post (too late), so I will get to the question at hand...
Have any of you (Arabic speakers or not) used Electronic dictionaries- native language into target language (i.e. Arabic-English/ English-Arabic dictionaries)? And if so, which ones? How useful did you find it, especially in comparison with paperback dictionaries. Would you recommend any particular brands, for English-Arabic?
I went to a large book fair in Cairo today with my Egyptian host family, and we looked at a couple of devices. I found a nice electronic dictionary for roughly 2,500 EGP (roughly 400.00 USD- discount price)- and was thinking about purchasing it. Appreciate your thoughts.

400 $ for a dictionary??? It's extremely expensive. I haven't used elctronic dictionaries but I use "Leo", it's an online one, but not for Arabic, and I use Wordreference.com
maybe for arabic it's an online dictionary as well? It would be free.If you've truly much money, then you can purchase it.

Its expensive because of the features- (voice recordings, extensive grammar, contextual references/usage, Arabic pronunciation of vocab/sentences/grammar terms, etc). It has a lot- the question is, however, will it be useful.
