I found out today that my school has assigned me lessons where I self study (lucky me) any language I want, with the help o the various language assistants in my school (We have one for: French, Spanish, German, Mandarin).
My school has textbooks for 3 of my languages (Expo (French), Listos (Spanish) and Echo (German)), but not for Mandarin.
In these lessons, I will be using these textbooks at my own pace (which is alot faster than the classes) to teach myself the language, as well as other methods (flashcards, my method (analytical), L-R perhaps).
Now, the dilemma is that I dont have anything (apart from a small TY book) to teach myself Mandarin.
Can someone tell me of a good, comprehensive textbook for self-teaching (or class use) for Mandarin (In English).
Preferably Free or Cheap.
Thanks

EDIT: Can a mod please move this to "Language programs, books" section where this was meant to be posted - Sorry - Thanks

Wikibooks have one on-line for free.
Can't vouch for quality or accuracy, cos I've yet to attempt to learn Chinese.

I don't study Mandarin, but I found Modern Mandarin Chinese Grammar and the accompanying workbook on amazon.com, which might work for what you're doing. I checked the table of contents, and the workbook has an answer key, so you'd be able to check your own work, rather than having to wait to meet with one of the language assistants.
Mandarin Chinese: An Introduction also has good reviews.
Admittedly, none of these are overly cheap, but in my 3 years of college experience, I have yet to see a cheap textbook, and never a free one. :)

Thanks Cainntear, but I am looking for a quite large one, covering a lot of material.
Josht, thanks very much for these, they are good, but not completly what Im looking for.
When I say cheap, I say i dont want to spend £100 + on the study of it with one book.
What sort of prices do you have to pay, and do you know of any good Mandarin ones.
Thanks

Could you clarify a bit more, then, in regards to what exactly it is you're looking for? Are you looking for a genuine "classroom" textbook? If that's the case, I would recommend you reconsider. As you're going to be approaching the language largely via self study, a real classroom textbook probably won't be a good fit for you. I have a few genuine language textbooks, and they're crammed with things that I simply can't do on my own. They are, after all, designed to be used in a class.

Josht
Okay, I, as I said, have some special self study periods for languages.
I want to do my qualifications in various languages, including Mandarin, and therefore I would need a book that could cover all that.
A classroom textbook that we use, I can easily do on my own (Just because its jammed full of topical vocab and grammar for the exams).
Thats the sort of thing I want. But i'll settle for most things.
Thanks
