Thanks, I remember as a kid being able to request books from other libraries in the city, but unless I am mistaken the Wikipedia article seems to indicate that it may be possible to request books that are available from all over the country, irrespective of their location. Is there a time-limit for these materials? I know you can renew your books so long as someone else hasn't placed a hold on it, but the FSI courses require a lot more time to complete than a typical book anyway. Anyway, I'm going to try this out :)

Crush: Yeah, Level 1 has 15 units.

My local library had Barrons Level 1 so I'm doing units 9-15 now as they aren't available at the FSI site.

Demipuppet: Thanks for the info. I called my library, and they're doing a search for me for Barrons Level 2 so I can continue without having to buy the course.

I already have Levels 3 and 4 (up to unit 55) downloaded and ready to go.

This is a really good course, I like it a lot.

I know FSI have all the grammar drills et cetera. But is FSI primarily centred around learning every sentence within?

Thanks

Thanks again Demipuppet for the heads-up regarding interlibrary loans.

I'm now doing Basic level 2. My library got the course from a library in Utah, and it came with the book. Nice to have the reference right there and not have to resort to the pdf. The book also has readings in it which I wasn't aware of, good stuff too.

V8: I'm not sure what you mean by every sentence within. What I can tell you is that the course is very thorough. If you're a complete beginner, you're going to find a lot of stuff over your head. If you already understand the grammar and the constructions, then this course is a really good supplement to whatever else you're doing. The drilling is very effective and of course with any course you're going to be introduced to different vocabulary and dialogues.

Something interesting with the Barrons Mastering Spanish Level 2 (FSI level 2). At the end of Units 18 and 19 the tapes are missing the conversation stimulus portions. The space on the tape is there but there is nothing.   Units 16 and 17 were fine, hopefully the rest of the course will be complete. These are my favorite parts of the units, strange that they're missing.

All four levels are available for download in the forums of fsi-language-courses.com.

Alex, I've had a look over there and can't find anywhere where you can download the 4 levels.

There is no section in the forums that takes you to a download area where you can pick your language and go.

Even going into the Spanish sub forum all I see is questions, in fact the first question at the top of the page a guy is asking for available download information for BASIC 1 and 2.

I did notice in the member contribution sub forum that a guy has claimed to have digitized the original 55 tapes, but has yet to get them onto a server for access. So maybe that's what you were referring to?

Maybe there's a link somewhere buried in the threads to a filesharing site. In any case, the site looks good with good intentions. It could be a lot better if it had a sub forum that took you directly to the downloads for all of the available languages. It does seem like that's their goal when you read the intro page before going into the forums...to make available to everyone what is common domain, but kind of confusing as there are no obvious downloads for the courses available.

Edit: I'm aware of the downloads that are available at the front end of the site and how in the Spanish it is patchy, kind of half complete here and there. My point here is in regard to the forums and how they don't appear to have any downloads available, or at least not readily accessible.
