After using Rosetta Stone for a while, I could actually think in Dutch (well, at least the words I knew. If there was a
word i didn't know, it would come out in English). I didn't even realise I was doing it until I wondered just how effective it had been! 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

Also, obviously, to complete the Assimil course entirely it takes roughly 5-6 months, I am visiting France in a couple of months and was wondering whether I would be at a basic level after 2 months of study using Assimil. Would Assimil be an appropriate course for attaining a basic, working knowledge of the language in a relatively short period of time, or are the dialogues a bit too "random" for that?

I thought immersion is when you use the language as though you were a native speaker, that's to say, when it's not the language what you care about. For example, when you attend to maths classes in your target language because of the maths, or when you try to pull at a nightclub in your target language, because of the women. Obviously, this is not the case of Assimil. It's not that I care about the name, but I think it is important to notice that you are talking of two different activities: massive, indiscriminate input (what I call immersion) and working with the language, for example with shadowing, L-R, flashcards, Assimil, and so on. 1 person has voted this message useful |
