Hi! I'm trying to learn japanese, and since this one is based on the FSI method, I want to try and use it. But since it's already dated (1963), the Japanesed language might have evolved a lot since then. So my question is, is it still a good idea to use the course? Will I do a lot of catching up in terms of vocabulary? More importantly, has the grammar structure changed a lot since then? Thank you.

I used this as my first Japanese text book back in the late 1970s. I also sent off to the States and got all tapes that went with it. However I found the book and the tapes very strange. The first thing I found out about the book was that it was very keen on "honorific" language, but I found out that it presented forms that are not in common use (Japanese would be very impressed with some of the forms I used but also a bit surprised that I would use them). In addition the Romaji they used were the official ones that even in Japan are not common. This was not a problem but I think it indicated that in trying to present the language "properly" they had lost the way in how learning takes place.
The tapes I found impossibly difficult to respond to in the drills and the time given. I asked my wife (Japanese) to try some of the drills in Japanese and she couldn't manage either.
The result was, althought the book and tapes appeared to be very specific and correctly presented they failed to help were boring.
