I'm completely new to this software, so I stumbled over a couple of difficulties when using it. Firstly, how can I make entries in Mandarin there? How am I to print in hanzi and pinyin? What do I have to have installed on my computer? The same is for German and its umlauts.

Look here for guidelines regarding pinyin, hanzi and more (it usually depends on your operative system):

If you don't want to type anything yourself (which however, could be a valueable step during the learning process), Internet is full of frequency lists, radicals, sentences, topic word lists et.c. which you can import.
