For any French speakers on the forum.

How do you translate the following

" they are very important IN SOLVING the crime "

I have

" ils sont tres important ................. le délit"

How can you translate the " in solving" bit?

English is much more vague than French, and this is a good example

I would expect to hear 'les preuves sont essentielles pour élucider le crime'

'en élucidant' means 'in the act of solving'

'En élucidant le crime Poirot a dû chercher des preuves'

In other words, as so often it's better to recast the sentence
