I'm learning Portuguese at the moment and I read that Galician was a dialect of Portuguese. Does anybody here

Galician I wouldn't say is a dialect of Portuguese since Portuguese comes from the area north of Oporto and in the Galicia area. I haven't really studied Portuguese, but Galcian seems like it's perfectly centered between Spanish and Portuguese. If you can read Spanish, Galician is pretty easy to decipher. The most obvious difference at first is that Galicians use X instead of J.

As I understand it, Gallician writing is more heavily influenced by Castillian Spanish than its spoken form.
Some people also say that the Portuguese spoken in the north of Portugal is more like Gallician than it is like the southern standard Portuguese. One article I read even went so far as to suggest that northern portuguese and Gallician were dialects of one language, and southern Portuguese should be considered a separate language. However, the issue is heavily politicised, so there's no such thing as an objective answer to the question. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

I've read many newspapers in Galician and listened to Radio Galega a lot......there's one "ancient" Galician that is still maintained in rural areas close to the border with Portugal....whereas in urban areas the standard Galician which is rather spoken just has some grasp of Spanish or "castelán"....some call it "castrapo"
I've thought of dropping it because of those political issues.....moreover, I'd already been insulted by a bunch of crooks on a Galician newspaper forum because attempted to write my replies in such type of that same standard Galician. well, you certainly know that most e-newspapers have a section in which you comment on any article, don't you?......there was one related to the language issue and I wrote something...of course, in standard Galician....at least I had tried it all to do it well....the following day there were some fools who threw debris at me just calling me "castrapeiro" and other absurdities in the following comments...I swear I didn't write anything offensive....a bunch of pricks who dream of Galicia as a new country just advocate that the ancient Galician should be taught at schools and not the standard.....that is called "Galeñol" as well.

Why don't you do a Google search about this issue. There's lots of real information to be had, not only Wikipedia but tons more. That should satisfy anybody's curiosity.
