One tool I've found extremely useful is diagrams of mouth positions (lip and tongue positions for vowels, and tongue position and shape for consonants).
Does anyone know of a good set of such diagrams for American English? I keep wanting to be able to refer some of my European friends to one.

Hi Volte!
This isn't really a diagram, but these English pronunciation videos on YouTube were of big help to a friend of mine who's learning English. The instructor draws diagrams of the position of the tongue, and she explains it pretty well, too.
EDIT: this particular lesson shows "R" and then R+L. I especially like how she describes "pulling your tongue back into a little ball". The whole thing is really informative.

These diagrams are indeed very helpful, I hope they were available for more languages.
