fredmf,

You make a good point. I am sure the success rate at FSI is greater. On the other hand, as a former Canadian Diplomat and language trainee, I have seen many people come out of these language courses for foreign service personnel and then not really use their language in work, other than for polite chit chat at cocktail parties. Somehow, for many, these courses do not create the confidence to really dive in.I believe an excessive concern about grammar and "perfect" performance at an early stage can make the language seem an artificial academic task, rather than a simple tool for communication and enjoyment.

Here is what we ask our learners to recite to themselves regularly at The Linguist (now LingQ) when learning English. Links to the English and Russian versions are provided below. We intend to translate this into other languages.

Yes, that seems plausible (i.e. only using the language for chit chat, being
timid about using it elsewhere)...I guess instilling confidence to actually use
what you've learned is much more an art than it is a science.

Thanks for the links...I could really afford to have a mantra like that,
especially as I've just gotten to the difficult parts of the "French With Ease"
program I'm studying. Good things to be keeping in mind.

What can I say...go and get yourself a free account at LingQ or at least access the free audio and text content for French at the www.thelinguist.com library.

Um, yeah, thanks, that's where I suspected this was leading. I do not share
or agree with your criticisms of Assimil -- I'm quite happy with it, and if
there's any academic-type pressure, it's coming from me, not from anything
I'm using. That was what I meant. But I'll keep your sources in mind if I'm in
the market.

Zhuangzi, while I respect your accomplishments as a linguist and I'm sure you have the best in mind, it's really not necessary to advertise LingQ every other post.
