OK with all the postive comments, I thought I'd add a negative (sorry).
One the funniest descriptions I've heard of Portuguese it that is sounds like Spanish that was damaged upon arrival.
that aside I can't get past the whinny sound of Portuguese, then there are the many slurry sounds, its speakers always seem to produce these odd nasal intonations that pop up everywhere unexpectedly.

Brazilian Jiujitsu or Gracie Jiujitsu!
The most effective grappling art or self defence system in the world. Often called the chess of martial arts due to it's tactical approach and many varied techniques. If you're a thinking man/woman (I assume most of the people are on this site) and you want to get into martial arts then this is one of the best.
If you watch UFC or Pride then you'll probably know that when the fight goes to the gorund it's all about Brazilian Jiujitsu. It's not pretty but it works.

"Spanish without bones". That's an accurate description. Portuguese is extremely vowel heavy. In Spanish, you're almost always moving your tongue.

Brazilian Juijitsu is a wonderful martial art, but it is not the "most effective" self defense system in the world.
First of all, it makes you extremely vulnerable. If you are grappling with someone on the ground, you are tied
up with them (almost literally). If they have a friend, there is nothing to stop the friend from coming up and
kicking you in the head. Taking a fight to the ground on purpose (which is what BJJ advocates) is a foolish
choice unless you have enough control of the environment to ensure that the fight will only be one on one.
As for the dominance of these sorts of styles in the UFC, the UFC has rules that are designed to give those sorts
of styles an advantage. For example, some of the best means of dealing with grapplers, small joint
manipulations (for example, grabbing fingers and breaking them), eye gouges, etc. are forbidden (for obvious
reasons). And of course, in the octagon you are guaranteed a one-on-one fight (a guarantee hard to come by
in the streets).
But as I said, BJJ is a wonderful art. Often a fight will go to the ground whether you want it to or not, and if it
does a complete martial artist should know what to do there. If someone were interested in adding grappling
skills to their martial arts repertoire, BJJ is definitely a great choice. It's just not the end all and be all that some
of its proponents claim. As Bruce Lee once said, "Absorb what is useful and discard the rest" Good advice for
martial artists, language learners, and life. :)
