I think the important question is "can multiple people use it on one computer"?

I know some software will only run under one named user, which is a royal nuisance to families. Why should families have to buy the same software twice if all family members want to use it?

There is always a good cure for this type of software.

Personally I know about a software, an expensive one at that, where the licence expires after one year of use, and you have to buy a new one if you want to use it after that.

It sure can be a nuisance, but it all comes down to what's in the licence terms that you agree to by purchasing the product. Basically the owner of the Intellectual Property rights decides the terms, no matter how abusive or obnoxious they might appear to be.

If the licence specifies that red-haired people can only use the software on thursdays in the afternoon, then you are in violation of the licence if you use it differently. They might be in trouble with legislation in many countries though if they tried introducing restrictions according to gender, race, sexual orientation or religion.

As you pointed out, there are limits: whoever owns the copyright of the software can make some legal decisions about how it can be used, but cannot dictate everything.

Quite a lot of terms are very likely utterly unenforceable.

And Cainntear: decide to live with it, use other software, or set up a shared account for the software and use fast user switching or similar. (I pick 'use other software', but if you want to support such companies with your wallet, it's your choice).

Rosetta Stone can be set up so there can be many unique users on one computer. So yes the whole family can use it each at their own pace.

I can only decide to live with it if I'm told!

Thanks nooblearner -- it's useful to know these things.

I have been playing around with the Japanese package and i do like it, its come on leaps and bounds from their previous version but i have found i prefer Michel Thomas as a method of learning.
