I haven't read Harry Potter in Italian so feel free to discount what I say.
I think it depends on what you are looking for. If you are looking for a leisurely way to learn, I don't think it will work. In fact, it will be quite fustrating and difficult to read it at your level because there will be many words you won't know and also some grammar. If you plan on reading it systematically and accept that it is going to be a very slow process, then more power to you.
If you decide to try it, I wouldn't mind reading about your experience.

I once made it partway through the first book in Italian before getting busy and never finishing. Rowling tends to use a specific vocabulary, so if you know the English books well, you'll often be able to guess what the Italian equivalents are. But there will still be unknowns. Why not start reading it with the English version at your side?

Topsiderunner, I may give it a try still.
newyorkeric, do you have any good recommendations for me at this point for some uncomplicated reading where I will still learn new words and grammar, but not get too frustrated at the pace?
Thanks,
Jon

Sorry Jon, I don't know of anything offhand. I learned most of my Italian from listening to radio broadcasts and talking with Italians. Can anyone else make a recommendation?

So, the consensus is that Assimil's Italian with Ease is the best starting course for learning Italian?
Is this the edition, you are talking about: http://www.amazon.com/Italian-Assimil-Language-Learning-Prog rams/dp/270051064X (contains both workbook and CD)?

Yes that looks like the same one that I got, unfortunately I don't have the cds.
Even so, I rate it, in fact I would even go as far as to say it's outstanding, well worth a look.

Googlehead,
You can buy the cd's by themselves, or better yet, I am sure you can find them on the internet. For a drastically reduced price of less than nothing.
Thom.
