I once made it partway through the first book in Italian before getting busy and never finishing. Rowling tends to use a specific vocabulary, so if you know the English books well, you'll often be able to guess what the Italian equivalents are. But there will still be unknowns. Why not start reading it with the English version at your side?

I can say from personal experience that this works. Volte has quite extensively described L-R method in this forum. I experimented with that method by using Italian Harry Potter because I know it well in English. Even though I am only at a beginner level in Italian, I could, simply by context, figure out a lot of words from the book, and I even learned some vocabulary without making a conscious effort because of the repetition of those words. I haven't done that for a while now, but I soon intend to read it again and hopefully do that with other books.

As for other Italian materials, there is plenty of good material available. One only need to figure out what they like.

IMHO:
Michel Thomas is pretty good. I am going through Foundation Course and find it very useful.Pimsleur is very good as well. I personally prefer to use Pimsleur after Michel Thomas in Italian, because Michel Thomas' method sort of creates a base where you are able to create basic sentences, and learn some vocabulary. Pimsleur takes the drills to next, slightly higher level. I also have Assimil with Ease in Italian, which I have not yet used but the book seems pretty good practice, as does the audio.

For books, try Big Green Book of Verbs. That's lots of verb practice and comes with its own CD which you can use for exercises.
