I want to convert the .cda files on the Assimil CDs into MP3 so as to run it through Audactiy and remove the spaces. Any software to do this?

You can use CDex to rip the CDs to MP3s. To convert to and from various audio formats, there is dBpowerAMP.

You can look for both at www.download.com

First you need to convert the tracks to .wav files (rather than .mp3 or .wmv, since you will edit them). Then edit them at will with audacity, and from audacity save them as mp3 files (using "export" or "export selection" from the "File" menu).

How to convert the tracks to .wav files, I don't know with Windows, but probably one of the softwares mentioned by other people above can do this.

CDex will convert them to either mp3 or WAV files. CDex is free. I use it all the time.

There is no need to convert to wav first. Audacity can edit mp3 files.
