I wonder why Linguaphone never had this problem with slow speech. |

A question. Do you mean that the Linguaphone audio isn't artificially slow or that it isn't a problem that it is?
The reason I ask is that it's my personal experience that with Linguaphone Spanish (my copy's 10 years old) and French (my copy's about 25 years old), even at the end of the course, the speech seems very far from native speed - much more so than with Assimil.
Andy.

Hi,
Having studied with Assimil Italian for quite some time, I am now able to translate all the lessons in writing, from Italian > English and English > Italian.
However, when I cannot see the writing, I cannot produce the language verbally without thinking very hard about it. Pronunciation is not a problem.
Why can I effortlessly translate the language, but not speak it efficantly? I know practice is necessary, but I have no one with whom to practice with.
Any advice greatly appreciated
Thanks

Perhaps a Michel Thomas or Pimsleur course will get you speaking a little more or at least a little more exposed to the process of producing the spoken language. Test yourself, how much Italian can you remember without relying on the written word?

Thanks for the reply
I should have mentioned that I completed all the Michel Thomas Italian courses prior to completing Assimil.
If I can't see the Italian words written, I can't seem to remember them very well. This is causing me great vexation. If I had anyone with whom to communicate with, I think it'd be ok, but unfortunately I don't have that luxury.
Thanks for your input

Sounds like you're at saturation point with the learning and just need to speak it, as you say. I remember reaching the same point in Spanish. I couldn't study anymore, I just needed to speak it. Holiday in Italy?

Funnily enough I have booked one for next March, going to Pisa.
I think it's the only option I have left.
Thanks for your input

Be sure to meet our resident Pisan (but Finnish, and an English teacher too) Bela Lugosi.
And be more sure to visit Florence, which is superior to Pisa from every point of view. "Better a dead at home than a Pisan at the door", an old saying.
