Having studied with Assimil Italian for quite some time, I am now able to translate all the lessons in writing, from Italian > English and English > Italian.
However, when I cannot see the writing, I cannot produce the language verbally without thinking very hard about it. Pronunciation is not a problem.
Why can I effortlessly translate the language, but not speak it efficantly? I know practice is necessary, but I have no one with whom to practice with. |

I don't think you need a conversational partner to correct this. You need to start expressing yourself verbally, and you can do that in conversatoins with yourself.
Like when you are walking the street, you can have conversations with yourself ... your internal-dialogue in Italian "Should I cross the street here at Jefferson, or walk another block and cross at Virginia?" In Italian. Or washing the dishes ... when you think to yourself: "which drawer is the potato peeler supposed to go in?" or whatever, say that to yourself in Italian.
Or if you are going over a conversation you had with your boss in your head, thinking up all the things you should have said, or might have said, day-dreaming, say it in Italian. Just try to talk to yourself in Italian as you get around your life.

Excellent point! I couldn't agree more.
