!!! SOLVED !!!

Reporting back as promised regarding the unwanted echo effects when recording live streams (from the "Stereo Mix" input) with Audacity.

I did actually get some very valuable suggestions and advice on the Audacity support forum which eventually pointed me in the right direction.

It turns out is was not Audacity that was at fault, but my sound card drivers. I still had the original drivers from when the PC was new in 2004. Simply getting and installing the latest drivers off the web solved the whole issue.

Personally I am extremely happy about having this annoying issue out of the way. Now I can make recordings of those few remaining audio resources that I hadn't found a way to record before.
