I'm curious about some of the discrepancy between Shanghainese writing and Mandarin that I've seen though. Since I always hear that Chinese languages have the same writing system. For example:

Where are you going?
Shanghainese: 依到嚡里去？(′noŋ tɔ ′ɦa-li ʨ‘i) (PTH: yi1 dao4 hai4 li3 qu4)
Mandarin: 你到哪里去？(ni3 dao4 na3 li3 qu4)

That would be the difference between Standard and dialectical Chinese writing. Native speakers of dialects can read Standard Chinese (which is based on Mandarin), and will write in Standard Chinese when the situation calls for it. But writing idiomatically in their own dialect, the grammar and vocabulary will be different.

Well, I tried to order other books, audio and video through amazon.cn and some other websites, but my credit cards don't seem to be working through their sites. I have those videos, but I prefer using books. If you have any other recommendations, it would be great, but aside from one English-Shanghainese book (Shanghai Dialect for Foreigners) on VeryCD, I haven't found much of quality on the Chinese web. But, maybe I am searching for the wrong terms.

Ah. I assumed you were in Shanghai. (Why would you need it otherwise?!) There are great books around (such as
学说上海话 - Mandarin-only, not the English version), some phrase-books, too... The bookstore on 福州路 has a
whole section of these. No idea if anyone has bothered to put them on the web, though...
