One of the things I love about language learning is being able to sing in a new language.

This was pretty easy with Spanish, but i'm a bit unsure about finding Russian music to sing.

I sing a lot of jazz, so does anyone know any female jazz singers who sing in Russian?

Thanks!

Oh Jesus...haha. Well, obviously the scope is pretty broad but from a female singer's perspective I guess jazz in the Nina Simone, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Billy Holiday sense of the word.

Though if it's in Russian there may be some local musical influence there which would be great.

Jazz is kinda not popular here, I don't know anyone who would sing something like Nina Simone for example... Jazz is not Russian music... try to find something in another genre, like rock, pop, that's would be much easier...

I actually came across this website http://www.jazz.ru/eng/ which lists a couple of artists. However i'm having trouble tracking down recordings! Unfortunately my russian isn't good enough to search through the whole website so i'm probably missing a lot! I have known a number of Russian jazz musicians in the past. Jazz may not be particularly mainstream in Russia but there is definitely a strong jazz scene, particularly in the larger cities.

So far the only name I have is Svetlana Panova. Hopefully I can find some more!

Jazz isn't really popular in Russia, but there was an 80s Soviet musical comedy about jazz -and early Soviet jazz enthusiasts- that was popular at the time.

Here is an excerpt with some female (and male) vocals:

Actually, you can see the whole movie on youtube, starting with this clip:

I think Larisa Dolina who is now a famous popular singer in Russia, did some if not all the female vocals in the movie I mentioned (she actually played the black Cuban jazz signer in the movie). Dolina started out as a Jazz singer, I think, but unfortunately these days it may be relatively hard to find her earlier jazz songs among all the popular songs that she keeps doing these days.

That's American music sung in English, right? Not sure where Russia would come in here...

You can try your luck here, though: http://jazzforum.ru/

Yes it is, but that style of jazz is also sung in French, Portuguese, Spanish, Flemish...I thought maybe there was a similar thing in Russian.

Thanks for the link! When my Russian improves vastly it'll probably be a big help!
