Hello, everyone!
I'd have a question relating Russian: is there any "hint" when to use и and ы? I know about the spelling rule that states you have to write и instead of ы after г, к, х, ж, ч, ш and щ, but what is the case with other letters? Most of the spelling mistakes I do is writing и instead of ы or writing ы instead of и, so if I knew something reference when to use the former and when the latter, it would mean a huge improvement.
Thank you for your answers in advance!
Francois

After ц you normally write и, but common exeptions are цыган, на цыпочках, цыпленок, цыкать. Hope it helps :)

Also, the words ending in -ец which drop the -е and add -ы:
американец / американцы
There are many such words.

These are complete rules for ЦИ-ЦЫ (not so many ;)). The main logic: the choice depends on the position of ЦИ-ЦЫ in a word.
ЦИ: in words ending in -ция (e.g. грация, станция)
in word stems (e.g. цирк, цифра)
ЦЫ: in suffixes (e.g. синицын)
in word endings (e.g. птицы/американцы)
4 exceptions: -Цыган- на -цыпочках- подошел к -цыпленку- и -цыкнул- на него.
(taught in the sentence that it's easier to remember)
So in case of американец / американцы it's not so much because the singular ends in -ец, but because the general rule applies - _any_ word _ending_.
