I think it might be useful to new members if we could collaboratively produce short summary descriptions of each of the major language learning programs, mainly describing what they cover and how they teach it. An outline of a typical lesson for each would probably be perfect. I myself am no expert of language learning programs and have little to no experience with them myself, in fact, but I think a lot of people would be better able to decide what program to use if they knew exactly how the lessons would be structured. If good, usable summaries are produced, maybe they could be moved into the beginner's forum as a permanent guide?

I will start the ball rolling by suggesting programs for review.
FSI Much audio and drills to teach basic language Pimsleur Half hour all audio lessons. Three levels cover basic vocabulary thoroughly. Expensive. Assimil Thorough course. Audio entirely in target language. Teaches spoken language. Short lessons can be completed in one day. Humorous dialogues teach culture as well as language. Cartoon to illustrate text in each lesson. Each 7th lesson covers grammar and explanations for preceding six lessons. Cortina Thorough course in spoken language. Plenty of helps. Hugo Language in Three Months New courses cover language and grammar very well. Living Language I like older programs better than new. Old programs entirely in target language. Excellent introduction to language. Ultimate Language Advanced Living Language courses. Come with 8 CDs. More thorough in grammar and language. Rosetta Stone Don't take you to fluency. Big use of pictures. Synergy Spanish Short audio lessons with practical drills. Direct approach to spoken language. Rocket Languages I am currently evaluating new Rocket programs Linguaphone Excellent courses. I am not familiar with all types of courses. Old programs come with many resources. Transparent Excellent courses computer based. Big emphasis on spoken language. Able to play audio at 4 speeds and to click on any word for grammatical breakdown. Learning Spanish Like Crazy Excellent course based on FSI. I have the program but have not progressed far enough yet to evaluate. Teach Yourself New programs much better than old. Quality differs from language to language. Excellent resource for anyone learning a language. Good grammar explanations. Get the Conversational course as well for full value. Colloquial I have several Colloquial programs. Quality varies with language. Good grammar explanations. Similar to Teach Yourself. A comment.
All of the programs I have named are useful. Obviously, some are more useful than others and some are better value than others. Even a poor program can add to your knowledge and be a good supplement if you are a student. I have course with ten languages. They have games and fun activities for children to master the basics of their chosen language. Several children in my family have the program and speak with a good accent. Excellent value. 1 person has voted this message useful |
