I bought the book, Learning Chinese Characters by Alison and Laurence Matthews, published by Tuttle, and I think it is great. I have other books on the subject but I have found their method to be extremely effective.
Characters are learnt very easily by means of pictures and mental pictures to impress the character on the mind.

I like this book a lot, too. It contains mnemonics for the character and pronunciation (including the tone) for 800 characters. I worked through the first 100 characters or so and even though I had to stop cold a few months ago, I still remember the stories well.
