Hello, I will be getting Heisig's Remembering The Kanji in a few days and have been looking at Anki as a possible future tool to help me. But, I have a couple of problems that I hope more experienced Forumites could give me advise on.
Firstly, I've haven't yet learned either the katakana or hirigana - but to use Anki, it looks like you have to already know these. Is there a way to get around this? Maybe just type in the romaji?
This brings me to my second problem - how to produce Japanese characters using a standard keyboard. Do you have to get a special keyboard to do this, or is there something you should download that helps produce the kanji etc.?

First of all, I think that everything has already been digitized so there is a chance that you don't have to type anything yourself. Who knows, maybe this is what you're looking for.
Secondly, how you type in Japanese depends on your computer and operative system, but this link can hopefully be of some help:

Anki has nothing that forces you to use the Kanas. The Heisig deck comprises readings in Kanas but you're not supposed to learn them at the same time as the meanings anyway. If you're going to learn 2000 Kanji, the kanas seem to be nothing in comparison :) I seem to recall that there are ready-made Kana decks for Anki anyway...
Have fun !

Anki is just a flash card program, so you can put whatever you want on the cards. If you want to use it to learn kana, you can use it to learn kana (although I personally think it's more efficient to learn kana by rote).
