Anyone read The Quick and Dirty Guide to Learning Languages Fast by Hawke?

I'm wondering if it is any good as a starter/primer kit to a new language?

I've read it; I wouldn't bother. It's the extreme end of "get something usable fast at all costs". It has a couple of interesting tips (ie, learn how to say a variety of simple things, and when faced with someone talking to you, ask a question using what you know to make sure you understood). On the downside, the advice is inconsistent and poorly described. If you look at the controversy over 'Tarzan speak' elsewhere on this forum, you'll get an idea of the style of language it recommends using; grammatical niceties aren't a priority, although it does say you should spend some time with grammar.

Worth a read? Maybe.
Worth basing your studies on? Not unless you're in the very specific situation of needing to communicate basic but not-only-touristy information within a couple of weeks, no matter what the cost to your future studies may be.

That was basically my question, was it worth a read?

I often approach language learning as a go for broke deal - you just gotta - German was not on my "lovely languages" to learn but now I am at it with a pssion - cause I gotta.

I'll search the Tarzan speak.

I read some of it and skimmed through the rest. It's got some good tips for getting survival skills quickly, but you can find much better language learning information and tips on this site.
