I've been studying German for 5 years now, and this year I am going to live in Germany for a year. In preparation for my stay, I'm looking to improve my German and try to get beyond the normal advanced stage. I'm particularly interested in finding resources to learn new (yet still commonly used) vocab. It would be great if the vocab was categorized into topics, or such. Thank you! Danke! One book that has helped me with vocab as a non-native is this one. It's a synonym dictionary with examples usages. For example Verhältnis/Beziehung, Regung/Gefühl/Empfindung, erfahren/erleben, etc. Even though German has exceptional dictionaries on the internet, it's really good.

You may want to have a look at Großer Lernwortschatz Deutsch als Fremdsprache, Deutsch-Englisch: Der komplette Wortschatz für das neue Zertifikat Deutsch by Dinsel and Reimann. It covers some 15,000 terms or so across a large number of topics and also includes special chapters on Austrian and Swiss vocab.
