Hashimi, I thought you said one could understand the Quran if they understand standard arabic. Wouldn't that mean knowing standard would serve the same function as knowing classical in regards to aiding communication between different dialects?

Yes, if you are fluent in Standard Arabic and fully immersed in the Arabic culture, you will understand the main dialects (from Morocco to the Gulf). If you are realy fluent in Standard Arabic, it means that you are familiar with Classical Arabic. If you look at the modern Arabic literature, you will see that they use a lot of Classical Arabic.

The two varieties are two registers of one language.

Arabic is not like English, you don't hear Chaucer for example on TV news! But in Arabic, it's not uncommon to hear a verse from a poem of the 10th century poet Al-Mutanabbi in a news report! (e.g. last night I was listening to report about the last operation in Afghanistan and the reporter quoted from a poem by Al-Mutanabbi saying: ma kul a yatamanna al mar' yudrikuhu, tajri al riyah bi ma la tashtahi al sufunu = Man achieves not all he hopes for, Winds blow contrary to the will of ships.)

Modern Standard Arabic is closely related to Classical Arabic. Classical books written in the 8th and the 9th centuries are sold in the streets and people read them without the need to study Classical Arabic.

If you learn MSA properly, not taking few courses in Arabic, you will understand Classical Arabic and other colloquial dialects like native speakers in less than 5 years.
