Hi everyone. I would like to ask if anyone can clarify the rules and changes in meaning for the pronunciation of the word "Plus." I am not always sure when I should pronounce the final [s] or not. I know in some cases it doesn't matter, but I have just found out that pronouncing or not pronouncing the final [s] in some cases can make a sentence affirmative or negative, completely changing the meaning. I have searched the internet and the several grammar and pronunciation books I have access to, but couldn't find a good guide on pronouncing this word. Can anyone on the forum shed more light on this? Thanks!

About.com has a good article here. There's also another explanation here (scroll down to #4.7). The second link gives a decent overview about when you can and can't use it.
I'm glad you asked this question. I had heard plus pronounced with the s sound even when it wasn't due to liaison. One of those times when it was used to mean plus in maths.

Thanks for your response. It's funny that it was actually a french.about.com page that first led to the question. Here's the link: http://french.about.com/library/weekly/aa101300v.htm.
I looked at Real Net grammar before, but missed #4.7. Thanks a lot for pointing it out. This really helps.

Why doesn't "Plus on lit, plus on apprend" from Real Net grammar #4.7.1 fall under #4.7.2? Would it not be correct to pronounce the s sound beacause of liaison?
