So in real life one would use tube more than he tenido I gues? Seems more to the point.

Not necessarily, it depends on the situation.

P.S. It's "tuve"

The funny thing about that particular error is that native Spanish speakers have made when I've been chatting with them. It falls under the category of error that is rarely made by a foreign learner because we've seen it written before we've heard it said, or soon thereafter.

Can you give me an example Patuco where it becomes clear for me what the difference is between "had" and "have had"? When you can clearly only use one of them? Thanks.

I'll try:

"He tenido un día malo" = I've had a bad day
"Tuve un día malo ayer" = I had a bad day yersterday

Using "tuve" inplies that it's "further in the past", if that makes sense.

What error are you referring to? The "b" or "v" sound?

Yes maybe with "have had" it sounds closer, more like today. But I also heard people saying "I had a bad day" when they meant today. So it doesn't seem a mandatory thing, which word you should use?

Yes, he meant my tube instead of tuve :)
I'm glad to hear that even Spanish people make those mistakes, more than foreigners even. That means that I speak Spanish very well already, berdad ;-)

I've always used the "have had" construction for recent past events.

Sometimes it seems acceptable to use either:

"You look terrible!"
-"I had a bad day"
-"I've had a bad day"

"Why were you out last week?"
-"I had the flu"
-"I've had the flu"

But not other times:

"Why are you limping?"
-"I had a nasty fall in Madrid last weekend"
-"I've had a nasty fall in Madrid last weekend" (doesn't sound great)

Using "have had" for today, and "had" for anything past that, may be a good rule of thumb, but don't quote me on that :)

That "have had" rule is very good. It means that something started in the past, and is continuing in the present.
I had a bad day. (but it's over now).
I've had a bad day. (and I can't wait for it to end).
