Just a little check if I heard it right:

In Pimsleur the "hay" sounds like "hEy" in the folowing 2 sentences. But maybe that is because they speak quickly. So to check it, are these translations ok, it is "hay" I should use here right?

Where is there a telephone?= Donde HAY un teléfono?
Over there is a telephone = allí HAY un teléfono.

Normaly it sounds like "hay" or hai but this time it sounds a lot like "hey".

Thanks.

Yeah, that's correct usage. Maybe the speaker had a funny accent or something.

BTW, which lesson are you on now?

If I remember correctly “Donde HAY un teléfono?” means that you’re asking where the phone is and aren’t sure if there is one, as opposed to “Donde ESTA un telefono?” Meaning, there’s a phone around here, where is it?

In one set of FSI drills they used "un/una" with hay,
and "está" with "el/la". ¿Dónde está el teléfono?
