In pimsleur a few lessons ago I encountered the use of "a mi me gusta." I always answered correctly when I had to use this, but I still donīt think I understand it enough to be happy. Maybe someone can clarify for me.

Basically they mean the same thing. What I want to know is this. Is the A mi used just as an emphasis in a situation such as this?

Bob - No me gusta la cerveza
Bill- A mi me gusta la cerveza

Because you are contrasting what the other person is saying you use A mi to emphasise that YOU like it. Is this correct? And are there other situations where A mi is used?

"A mi" means "to me" or "for me".

Yes, for example,
Bob: I don't like beer = No me gusta la cerveza
Bill: I do like it = A mi si me gusta

Although you could also have,
Bob: A mi me gusta la cerveza = I like beer (literally "To me I like the beer")
Bill: Pues, a mi no = Well, I don't (literally "Well, to me not")

These last two phrases show the dangers of literal translations.

I don't know Spanish, but in Italian "A me mi piace la birra" ("A mi me gusta la cerveza") it's wrong. You can say "A me piace la birra" or "Mi piace la birra", but "A me mi", "A te ti" "A lui gli" etc are wrong. However, there are many italians who say it...

It's 100% correct in Spanish.
