When I was initially learning from studySpanish.com I learnt that when saying "in the morning" you say "por la mañana." Now i´m learning with Pimsleur which always uses "en la mañana." I had a lesson with my Spanish tutor just then and used "en la mañana" and she then proceeded to tell me that it is "por la mañana" and using "en" is wrong and I should never do it. I asked her where it is used (because it obviously is somewhere!) and she just kept saying it was wrong.

Could some speakers of Spanish (native and non-native) please tell me which of these they use (and where they use them) and help me decide which is best for me. Cheers!

This will be the same Spanish tutor that told you that the "de" in "después de que" was wrong and that you should use "colegio" instead of "escuela" .

"En la mañana" is in no way wrong - it's simply not used where she comes from. It's common in Latin-American Spanish and I remember looking it up when it first appeared in Pimsleur because I was used to "por la mañana".

Andy.

P.S. I think you might need to have a think about how good your tutor actually is.....if she's claiming to be able to teach Spanish to foreign language students, she should at least be able to differentiate regional usage and expressions rather than simply dismissing everything as being "wrong".

"En la mañana" sounds wrong to me but, as Andy mentioned, it's probably because I'm used to hearing "por la mañana" instead.

As to which version is best for you, it depends on where you are. I would suggest using the version which the native speakers around you use.

FSI Spanish teaches that both "en la mañana" and "por
la mañana" are correct, but encourages "por la mañana".
They say some Spanish speakers consider "en la mañana"
an Anglicism and therefore think of it as a corruption
of the language. Use "por la mañana" and no one will
be offended. Perhaps Pimsleur uses "en" because it's
easy to remember.

I also had this same question and I asked my Spanish teacher (native from South America somewhere).
He said both are correct.
And he said something about en beeing more specific (or was it por?). Anyway, one of them was more stretched over the entire night, the other was more on an exact period. But anyway, I also learned that both are ok.

Andy E, yes, i´m learning to filter some of the things my tutor tells me. She is a qualified teacher of Spanish as a second language, but at the same time is very "patriotic." thats the wrong word, "regioniotic" maybe, haha....but it gives you an idea of what I mean. She is constantly telling me that her accent and the accent of the family I live with is the "perfect Spanish accent" because it is from the region that Spanish originated from. So of course vocabulary gets included into that aswell. I have an open mind and know that everywhere you go Spanish is spoken slightly different and I can´t just rule out something because in this one town in the middle of Spain it is "wrong". Thats why I come to you people of this forum for a second opinion and it always helps, so thanks all. In reguards to the subject....i think i´ll stick with Por.

I was taught that "por la mañana" was more along the lines of, during the morning, and "en la mañana" was in the morning.
