I've had good success reading news articles translated to Russian from English. I've found a good method is:
1) Find an article in Russian, that was probably originally written in English (the non-Russia specific articles on BBCRussian seem to do the trick) 2) Read through the article two or three times without looking any words up, even if I only understand say every 5th word. Each time I tend to pick up additional words from context 3) After I can't figure anything out on my own, I find a word that I have no clue of its meaning but has appeared several times in the article. I look up that word (and make a flash card it). That typically helps me learn 5-6 more words from context alone, rereading the article with this new knowledge. I do this again for 3-4 words if there are that many I don't know that are repeated throughout the article. 4) At this point I usually have a basic idea of what the article is saying, and understand fully large chunks of it. But, there is still usually a paragraph or two that make no sense whatsoever. 5) Before even looking at the English version, I go to google news and find another article about the same subject from the same day in English, but not from the same source. This helps me get context on the subject, independent from the language and exact words of the article. At this point, rereading the target article I can garner a few new words just from the new information on the subject (I'll obviously skip this step if its an event I've learned about outside of my language study) (6) Finally I'll read the English version of the target article, then read the target article again, picking up any remaining content I couldn't figure out before This has been really rewarding. I used to use the Barry Farber method of looking up every word I didn't know, paragraph by paragraph. This method seems to work MUCH better. 1 person has voted this message useful | |

That sounds really interesting, I'm going to try it. I have been doing the Farber method with articles I have printed from Izvestia. It has been slow going. Thanks for the tip!
