How much do you actually know Russian culture & history?

Oh je,

I did the Russian IQ test and got the clear result that I'm not familiar with Russia.
There were so many things in this test, which I just didn't know.

Out of 19 questions I had 8 correct and I ran out of time.

My score is "significantly below average".

I am not dealing with the Russian language anyway, after having dabbeled a bit in this language in 1996 / 1997.

Well, a lot of this stuff I just remembered from school. Sweden had quite a lot of interaction with Russia in history (wars, trade and the vikings went there etc).

A lot of the political stuff was covered, and the historical events of the revolution etc. There was a quite serious geography course of the USSR (although it was just starting to disolve).

I am old enough to remember all the dramatic events of the Yeltsin years, so none of it was really that hard since these events were always in the news back then.

I read the blog of a girl who studies in Yektarinburg. She explains Russian holidays in her blog. Otherwise I would not have known those.

Obviously I knew that the US and Russia were never in a war, because I am still here and not nuked, lol!!! But it was a very big worry when I was a child in the 1980s.

History: Russia has seen many invading armies. Which of the following countries has never sent its troops to Russia?
Answer: United States
Description »»

Russia’s rise as a sovereign nation and a great power has been turbulent and troublesome.

Russia ...had had minor border skirmishes with the Chinese in 1968.

Russian soldiers have never fought against Americans. However, American expeditionary forces had been stationed in the Russian Eastern capital, Vladivostok, in 1917 to aid “White” (pro-monarchy) forces in their fight against “Red” armies (Bolsheviks).

Well, they didn't ask which country never fought Russians -and even that cannot be claimed about the U.S., as the following article makes clear:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polar_Bear_Expedition

The question was: "Which of the following countries has never sent its troops to Russia", and the United States is NOT a valid answer, according to their own explanation. A case can be made that while there were some border skirmishes between USSR and China, China had never sent troops to Russia - so I think my answer of "China" is more valid than their answer.

History: What was the name of the city that was established by Viking princes, burnt by the Mongols and the Moscow dukes?
Answer: Novgorod
Description »»

Novgorod was once one of the two most powerful city states of Russian lands and the capital of Northern lands (Kiev ruled in the South). Novgorod practiced a parliamentary form of government and had developed trade ties with many European cities including Germany and England. However, the Mongol raid put an end to this prosperous place. The city was burnt and most of its citizens murdered. It took nearly 100 years to rebuild the city and unfortunately it was burst again, this time by Moscow dukes, who tolerated little descent. The Novgorod tragedy has had lasting consequences for Russia. Moscow’s vision of strong central government has remained the prominent feature of Russia’s political organization ever since.

I don't see a reference to the fact that Novgorod was burned in either English- or Russian- language Wikipedia article on Novgorod. In fact, googling "novgorod was burned" only returns references to *Nizhny* Novgorod being burned by the Tatars. The English language Wikipedia article on Novgorod mentiones that

Novgorod was never conquered by the Mongols during the Mongol invasion of Rus. The Mongol army turned back about 100 km from the city, not due to the city's strength, but probably because the Mongol commanders did not want to get bogged down in the marshlands surrounding the city.

So it sounds like the authors of the test mixed up the two Novgorods.

Many of Russia’s churches have golden domes. Do you know why?
Answer: To make churches more visible from above, to God.

It is the first time I hear that. A Wikipedia article (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Onion_dome) mentions this:

The domes are often brightly painted: their colors may informally symbolise different aspects of religion. Green, blue, and gold domes are sometimes held to represent the Holy Trinity, the Holy Spirit, and Jesus, respectively.

Judging by how the got some of the answer questions/answers wrong, I wouldn't be surprised if this was incorrect, also.

But the most obvious error is the question on the Great Patriotic War. They made it sound like this name was applied to about 3 different wars, while it only referred to the Soviet involvement on the Eastern Front in WWII.

Although 2 questions where simply slip of the pen, I'm still surprised that I answered so many questions wrong. I've always thought that my knowledge about Russia is really good. Untill now.

This is amazing. It seems that you were trying to answer every question wrong. We don’t know what to say. You either have something against our test or against Russia.

Says it all really!
