I started Mandarin and Japanese a year apart and took everything my school offered in them and did a year in both countries during my undergrad. (Unfortunately my school only offered 2 years worth of each.) But if you really like them both, I don't see why it would be a problem. Seriously if its something you 'like', then your 'study breaks' from other tough subjects can be comprised of working on your Chinese and Japanese for a half-hour here and there and everywhere.
